We have both types of firefighters and a handfull of firefighters that are responding and doing the work after. Sometimes it will bother me but mostly I am not bothered by it because I know why I am there. I see myself on call unless I am at work ...

How skilled are you with a BVM? Consider hand placement, rate of ventalaion, and seal. Don't forget hyperextenstion to open airway.

Bad as it seems you have to follow policy. But sometimes it goes abit too far. Down south we have a saying " Sounds like they are killing flies with a shotgun ". In others words if they had a problem with certain cartons they should address that, ...

The newer guys do not allways grasp " Thats how it was then " and can not relate to currnet times. It gave a goal to reach for when it was all so ahead of it's time. Embrase the past and go forth to improve all we have. But we all had a starting p...

On our dept, if Motorola is in town, our fire chief will make a page saying if we have any problems with our pagers to come to the station. We have two pagers. the Minitor IV and the Minitor II. But that is the way we do it in Texas.

I was once in a Fire Dispatch class from APCO. The instructor was a career Lieutenant from somewhere in Mississippi, and he was very young. At one point he said he had heard of but never seen an old show about some paramedics in LA county called R...

The Motorola minitor II's are the most reliable. The next best is the IV's but they quit making them like five years ago when when they made the V's. So V is about the best I can say. You can check ebay for older minitors that are hard to find. I ...

About Me:

Started firefighting when we did not have a station but had a 1946 pumper and a 1954 surplus 6x6 tanker. I am the oldest continuous member of our dept . Side Jobs or Other Organizations:
I also work at The University of South Carolina Aiken in the Cardiac Rehab program since 1994.
Top Issues Facing Responders:
Getting volunteers, the numbers have dropped over the years of those who wish to serve their fellow man. Funding has allways been an issue. The time one has to commit to training and more and more requiremnts has put the Volunteer FD in a tight area.
I Love Being in Fire/EMS Because:
Being a firefighter gave my life a purpose at a time when I did not know what to do as a profession. It led to me getting into EMS and opened other doors. It makes me feel good that others respect and need my expertise. Not in a way that makes you better than anyone, but in way you know you can help and give back to those around you.
