Why I Joined the Fire/EMS:
As a result of a recent drowning, I,being a pastor, was asked to speak with some of the firefighters who were involved in the recovery efforts. From that they asked me if I would consider being the fire chaplain for the station. I readily accepted their invitation. What a challenge and what an opportunity to make a difference!

Welcome to the world of emergency services.

While there is a ton of training out there, I have really used about three phases.

My basic chaplain training came through the Federation of Fire Chaplains which is based out of Fort Worth. They have a basic course that is sometimes taught within the region that covers topics such as the chaplain role vs a pastor role, death notifications, incident command, and line of duty deaths.

On the CISM side, there are a number of certifications available. The first one I would try to get is the Basic Group Intervention. This will certify you in becoming a team member and how to use the debriefing and defusings. Others that I have attended and you may want to add is the Advance Group, Peer Intervention (One on One) and Pastoral Intervention.

The third area I have ventured into is attaining my degree in counseling. This isn't required and does help to supplement my income, but it does allow me to better serve and counsel the fire personnel and their families.

If I can be of any other help, please let me know. My email address is psichaplain@yahoo.com.
