So, let's say i'm considering going to Australia over spring break, what are some things you recommend I see?

Yeah, our economy's on the rocks right now too...what's going on with yours? Thankfully, with all of the idiots running around, we have some definite job security in emergency field! :D

You'd think we'd all be used to it by now, but it still catches us every year in the fall...like we'll get down to 30-40 degrees and people will start pulling out winter coats, then in the spring when it finally gets up to 30-40 degrees, we're all walking around in flip-flops and sweaters, it's interesting. :)
We just started school again on Tuesday and so far...haven't really done much. I have one more class today then i'm done for the week! woo! I feel like a total slacker this semester thoguh already! Sociology classes are so much easier than bio courses!

Do you have to do any schooling to be an air traffic control guy?

Ooooooo...what made you think of Air Traffic Control as a possible career?

It's been so cold here...it's a little warmer today though. I apparently keep missing memos from one of my depts. I arrived for training at 0900, we usually have training on the 3rd wednesday of every month, offered twice that day. Come to find out (after I got there) that they changed it to Saturdays. So, since I was there, they put me to work helping decon the ambulances because the last crew that was on did a horrible job, after which I did some 12 lead training, so the morning wasn't a total bust.
Haven't had much in the way of interesting calls...a few fender benders, a few water alarms for the fd to respond to busted water pipes, but that's really about it...it's been kind of slow, but we're starting to pick up again with the drunks, so it should get interesting again pretty quick. ;-)

Haha, yeah, only one problem with wearing rescue gloves over my nitriles....I didn't have my turnout gear! I went directly to the scene because it was less than a block away from my house...so, technically speaking, I shouldn't have been the one in the car, but...that's how these things work sometimes! :)
Yeah, total bummer today....I was on my way home from work, normallya 20-30 minute drive from the full-time dept i'm on and it's like -15 F....and the heat in my car doesn't work (it chooses when it wants to work and when it doesn't), so of course, given this situation, I hit a huge patch of ice on an s-curve, and even though i'm going slow...apparently I wasn't going slow enough...I put my car in a ditch and some very deep snow...almost rolled my car, thankfully it ran up against the snowbank before I did. Instead, I ended up at about a 45 degree angle in the snowbank that i can't get out of, in cold weather, with no heat...great, lol. My captain ended up coming out and towing me out...he was thrilled to come out and play in the snow with me and my car, lol. :)
I didn't end up doing anything at work though, we ended up just working on a bunch of projects all day...cleaning, organizing, fixing...playing videogames... you guys have anything?

Hey, i'm sorry if "I" was rude to you earlier...some of my co-workers had gotten ahold of my computer and were playing around on my facebook..

Man, it is just like ridiculously hot down there. What do you do when you have an "active standby for extreme rural fire weather"? Everybody hangs out at the station and responds to anything that happens?
We got pretty well hammered yesterday for calls...couple car accidents and all...the firefighters were all excited because they got to use the jaws to get one of my patients out. Only problem is that it's so darn cold and nitrile gloves are definitely not good enough for keeping your hands warm! We were just about frozen when we finally got everyone into the rigs. It's supposed to get even colder again tomorrow..so, of course, we're going to probably get some massive accident that requires us to be outside for hours before we can leave...because that's just how events like to roll in this weather, lol. :)

Nothing much...it's actually kind of a bummer. I ended up running alll of friday night (though the snow) doing interfacility transfers with my partner that apparently NOBODY else wanted to take...to like THE hospitals that are the farthest away...then to top everything off, our ambo died on us while we were in one of these other cities and we had to try to get a jump from another car. Nothing yesterday until late, we had our yearly banquet, I left and 2 minutes after I got on call we got a lady with abdominal pain so I ended up running in the ambo with a couple guys from a neighboring city that was mutual aiding us.
Wow, you've only seen snow 3 times? About 6 months out of the year here we eaither have snow or the weathermen are predicting snow...where else have you seen it besides home?

You're going to love this...we're currently in a state of winter emergency due to snow conditions. We're getting about a foot of snow over the course of the day. Because of this, police don't go out unless there's an emergency and we don't do anything unless we have a rescue call...the ambulances aren't even really supposed to leave the bay unless there's a rescue call because of hazardous road conditions.

Tiger; I am not surprised that "excessive" training requirements make the news, it's the one thing that many volunteers can get behind. They just don't have the time for it. I think it's absurd to consider lowering the training requirements. Train...
