I think others have mentioned it as well, but I'm going to echo the same thoughts as they did, in that it "depends". Some departments have a chief who is really nothing more than a figure for the fire department and a paper pusher. And other more...

If you are a chief and think you have to make all the calls or something will happen then you need to do some serious training. Im chief of all volley dept and have faith that my officers and ffs can run a scene without me there. I have a job that...

I agree to this Don, especially on the other officers experience. I believe, if they are in charge when I get there, then it's their scene and I trust they'll do a fine job. That's my time to hump hose and help with other things on the scene.

In our department we have a chief and 2 assistant chiefs.. our chief does make it to most of the calls however if he is unable to one or both of the assistants will show up and they are just as capable of handling the scene. However, we have alot ...

Well that all depends on the situation. Like alot of other people have said, if your chief is a full-time paid member, then yeah; he probably should be at about that mark. I think for alot of your smaller vollie dept's (which is what most of us co...

My Chief leads the pack when it comes to makeing calls

As the chief of our fire department, I have the most call volume. I attend if I'm around and it's kept me there all year, but that will change when school starts. I am a full time teacher and there is just no way I can attend, but the assistant ch...

Just wondering due to the lack of some chief that dont show up on must of the calls!
August 11
Probably not, between work, family etc..And with it being summer-our chiefs like to go out of town alot on the weekends.Have seen our chief respond from his job( he's allowed).I guess thats why we have chain of command.I'm one of our line officers,...

Small time volunteer dept. Around 50-60 calls a year, don't know if the cheif makes 50% of those calls
August 9
Unfortunatley, our Chief has a job that takes him out of the area a lot. We have a wonderful Captain that tries to respond to 99.9% of the calls, but we also have many firefighters that have the capabilities to handle situations accordingly.
August 9
Our chief has to pay the bills just like the rest of us so he doesn't make too many daylight calls. Other than that he is usually there. I think it really depends on your department, call volume, and what the call is.
August 9
i think it depends on the department if the fire chief should be at 90% of the calls. with my department the chief trys to be at nost major events. the chief depends on his officres on the department. if chief is not their and he needs to be their...
