Well thought, and perhaps a bit strong, but I defend your right to express it. If I may, I'd like to respond to your points: 1. I wouldn't discontinue any junior firefighter program as long as the kids are serious about it. If they truly want to ...

Too late, already had it this month. I lost time from work, thought I was going to die because I was in the high-risk age group, coughed and sputtered for a week--even after the five-day dosing schedule of Tamiflu, and didn't get my voice back to ...

At least the cows had their own milk for those cookies.

That's what makes our job so great: you can't make this stuff up.

Our department is only supposed to handle EMS calls at night, not during the day, so it was out of protocol for us to be responding to a clogged catheter call in the middle of the day. Neither responders nor EMT-B's can do anything for a plugged-u...

Our explorers use blue helmets, as do other posts in the county.

While I think the intentions of all amber are well and good - I will stick to using what I've got until I am shown otherwise. But I do totally agree that all personnel on or near a roadway whether it is shutdown or not should have some standard o...

For me i think fire service want us to teach fire prevention to the public about fire safety, but at the same time why not teach them that """if your driving the speed limit and your geting closer to the big red truck! maybe you should slow down b...

It's all interesting, this discussion about emergency lights. I've heard that the London Fire Brigade tested it and found that running lights and sirens actually had very little result on vehicle travel times. As was said, who knows where we'll be...

I don't know about red lights attracting drivers to the scene, but at least one study suggested that drunk drivers actually do drive into parked emergency vehicles. Apparently the bright flashing lights catch and keep their attention and literally...

We have one rotating amber light on the rear of our first out engine and one strobe on the rear of our second out engine. It would be pretty much impossible for us to do that. Those red lights are on there for a reason. If there is a problem with ...

Interesting. In NSW we are really limited how many flashy things we can have on the apparatus, so our wagons aren't nearly as bright as back in the US. That said, I'm a big fan of every available light, flasher, indicator, and bit of reflexite tha...

Huh, umm ya I didn't hear this from any EVOC instructors but I have heard this. I guess they just want us to use our flashers and arrow stick in the back. The way people explained it to me is that people think the apparatus is still moving and sla...

sounds like the instructor is reading per line from the "official" safety book, did anyone bother to ask him if the red lights are off won't the bright red flames attract as much attention?..this tiny issue has been tossed about the political we a...

I have had EVOC 4 or 5 times and have never heard of your instructor's theory. We leave the red lights on, but I sometimes turn the head lights off if they are pointed toward on coming traffic. I wonder if amber lights work well enough to put mone...

When we turn off our Reds is completely dependant on the scene we are at> If its a MVA on the Hwy then we stay as lighted as possible to ensure we are seen by drivers even with our traffic control points set. At a fire of the road way everything i...

John, Regarding siren timers in Most Embarassing Moments, get this. To get the attention of nearby members, there was what we called our "little whistle" (a siren from a 1952 police car) mounted on the corner of the station. That was activated by the incoming phone call. After 1 minute of that, the big one on the roof of the building kicked in automatically and blew until one of us got out of bed, drove to the station, accessed the station, ran back to the radio room, answered the phone, pushed the stop button, wrote the info on a blackboard and then dispatched the alarm over the home recievers; unless of course it was a wrong number. I could hear the "little whistle" from home so I had fast response and dispatching down cold. On the call in question, nobody had put the stop button at the top of thier list. Yes, you can rest assured that it has all been brought up state-of-the-art dispatching on a county level now.

Hi,
Greetings from Saratoga county. Always glad to have more NY Firefighters join us on the nation. Ames is a really nice rural area. Often traveled through it heading to my cousins dairy farm in Jordanville in the 70's. Enjoy the journey and stay safe. Pete

Ron - Agreed - working in an area with many teaching hospitals we often get well meaning medical folks eager to help or to try their new skills on the street. We inform them if they want to take charge of the scene they must accompany the patient...
