Did anyone else also notice tat the firefighter on the roof was dragging his axe behind him, rather than sounding the floor he was stepping on??? Scary.

Finally, we got our list together. We had a great year in 2008 for the most part. There were some sad moments, such as the death of one of our long time board members/vice chairman and that of one of our former firefighters, but there were happy m...

London, Kentucky
I Live: (City, State)
London, Kentucky
Years in Fire/EMS:

Why I Joined the Fire/EMS:
It's been a tradition. My dad and his two brothers helped build our volunteer fire department. My husband, several of his cousins, my cousin and his wife--we are all in the fire service. I love it. I only regret that I can't attend all calls because of my 6 year old and 4 year old sometimes sleep! But when they're awake, they ready for the call too! My 4 year old daughter especially! She'll be in the truck when the tones drop and buckled up before I can get my shoes on! Looks like the tradition WILL continue!

My Training:
I'm getting close to my first 150 hour milestone, I can't wait. I've participated in one live burn, and it blew my mind. You can imagine whatever you want about fire, but it has a life all its own that you only discover in the midst of the flames! I'm attending my second "Fire School" in October '08 at London, KY, held by State Fire and Resuce Assoc. I can't wait!
About Me:
I'm married with 2 kids, 6 and 4. They both love fire department activities. It's not just something that mom and dad do, it's a way of life for us. I'm also the Ladies Auxiliary President at our department. I can remember the smell of dad's turn-out gear after a fire when I was growing up. Everyone hated the smell except me. I was drawn to it. I figured then, I'd either be a 'fire-bug' or a firefighter when I grew up. Thank God I went the right way!
Day Job:
I'm a school bus driver for Laurel Co. KY schools and a full time student at Somerset Community College Laurel Campus
Side Jobs or Other Organizations:
Occasionally I work in constuction with my dad's company Dale Wyatt Construction, out of London, KY.
Personal Site/Profile:

Top Issues Facing Responders:
Budget problems, ungrateful victims--we got totally griped out for showing up to a grass/woods fire the other day that turned out to be a controlled burn! We just told them we didn't know, we just respond when paged out!
I Love Being in Fire/EMS Because:
The feeling I get when we can save life or property is absolutely unbeatable!

Not "Fallen" but "Falling"!

Today we responded to a fire on Line Creek with Lily. I was getting ready to leave in the tanker to go find a hydrant to refil, and realized that we had deployed the hose we would need and I had to go get a hose to take to the hydrant with us. Always trying to help somehow, I started getting out of the passenger side of the truck (where I had been sitting) to get the hose. Believe me, I was holding on with 3 points of contact as I was getting out of the truck, and I fell anyway...(Yes I use 3 po… Continue

thanks for commenting about the line "from the flames of hell to the gates of glory." I actually read it on a t-shirt for fallen wildland Firefighters. We had a really rough season this year, losing over 20 brothers and sisters, 2 of which were friends of mine who died in a helicopter crash in california, along with 7 others and 4 in the hospital.

by far though the most meaningful thing I ever came across was for the 14 firefighters who died at Storm King Mountain in Colorado. the plaque reads;
"in a storm and cloud and wind and sky
in heart and hand and heart and eye
a blond still binds too to tell
all those who fly with those who fell."

I may be off by a word or two on that, I was going purely off of memory but its deeper than anybody can fathom.

Welcome to FFN and thanks for the add. We're glad to have you on this side of the big pond. But if you ever make it to jolly ol' England, look us up over there too - we have a location in a suburb of London. In the meanwhile, our main office is just up the road one way, and our turnout gear plants are just up the road the other way. So if you need anything - just ask! Be safe out there!

well actually its about 2 hours from london. lol you say london and all i think of is england. I have pretty much decided i want to stay in the department i love it so much. My family really doesn't understand why i wanna do this, they assume its just bc i wanna hang out with the guys. I really try my best and today i had a pretty good time (52 seconds) and beat some of the guys changing airpacks. Really the only problem is my station doesn't really let us do very much, we are only allowed to respond to structure fires in our district between 4 and 9 pm monday through thursday and 4 pm friday to 9 pm sunday. basically we only lug hoses, change airpacks, and then repack an clean the gear. its a taste i guess lol

Thanks Becki. I have been in and out of Houston a couple of times on transfers since Ike hit. The damage there is not as bad as Galveston, but still amazing and heartbreaking. Stay safe.

I was taught that you advance an uncharged line up a ladder draped over your shoulder with the nozzle on your back. That way if the line is accidentally charged, it will force you into the ladder and not off. I see no dangers to advancing an uncha...
