Art, I just took your survey. Now I have a little more insight re: your needs, so Ill share this with you here. Our "firefighters" (volunteers) have blue lights on their own vehicles for ID so traffic control people can ID them at the scene. They afford no traffic privelidges. However, locals sometimes let them by. The major abuse of the blue light is when rookies drive as though they had those emergency privelidges. Here in New York State Chiefs and Asst Chiefs personal vehicles are considered emergency vehicles and are authorized to have red lights and sirens and have all the special traffic privaledges granted by their use. I believe that is a good thing. We have 1 chief and 2 asst. chiefs and one them is almost always on scene way ahead of the first responding unit and their size up and on scene investigation is usually very beneficial to reaponders. In your survey you clump everyone under the title of "firefighter" and there is no way to explain about officers and Chiefs who are not "firefighters". That would seem an easy fix. Best wishes on your project.

Originally prior to us having crews at the station, our volunteers (55 total) were permitted to have red lights in there vehicles to respond into the station for calls with approval of the department chief. They had a form they would fill out for approval. The prvilege could be revoked by the chief due to miss use or conduct of the member. Since now we have crews on duty at the station, we no longer permit red lights in povs of our members. Our department now has 185 active running members.
