Drinking water...as mentioned above, it's a requirement for those out-of-control grass fires. Here's one no one has mentioned...leaf blower. No, seriously...you can put out a lot of grass fire with a leaf blower. They move air at somewhere around...

Neighboring town had a haunted house... The easily scared could request a member guide them through. When the "actors" in the house saw a flashlight leading a group they were under orders not to jump out. I thought it was a heck of a good idea... ...

I have to agree. Get Engine 1 out and go defensive. Around here, we don't have aerials or hydrants, so call mutual aid for tankers, establish water supply and get as many 2 1/2" lines shooting through as many open windows as possible. Andrew

"For my own knowledge, how exactly does a paid on-call dept. work?" In our paid-on-call department, we get paid any time we are doing fire related "stuff". Meetings, practices, calls, maintenance, etc. This way, we become employees of the municip...

In our department, everyone carries pagers. Although, we are starting to look at multi-channel radios with the pager frequency one it - best of both worlds. Andrew

I agree with Joe. Around here, most of our calls are on rural gravel roads...very little traffic. We don't use the sirens unless needed. Of course, if your country/state/province/municipality/county/district/etc has a law/SOG that says different,...

Here (Canada), we are paid when on call (emergency, training, work around the station, etc.) so that we are then employees and covered under insurance, worker's comp, etc. So we aren't a "volunteer" department in the truest sense of the word, alth...

Nah, too hot for me! You can always add layers at -40º Andrew

You're surprised by 100 gallons??? Most highway rigs carry up to 300 gallons. If the spill has already soaked into the ground, we notify the cleanup crew and they deal with it. If the fuel is still running out of the tank, then we would plug it a...

If the guy isn't already out, this will be tough. Don't just start to crawl out on the ice. Use ladders to spread your weight. Everybody that goes onto the ice must have a safety line. Hopefully, you can get the door open. Top of the cab is visibl...

Some info on NH3 (Anhydrous Ammonia): While the HAZMAT guys won't like to hear this, you CAN deal with NH3 in your structural PPE. Make sure ALL skin is covered, SCBA is on, and go in under a fog stream. (One of those times you get to turn the ho...

Yeah, we usually get a couple of ammonia leaks per year. Half are in the summer because someone filled up the tank too full and now the relief valve is letting vapors out. The other half are uh-oh's either late fall or early spring. Everything fro...

What were they drying? Around here, flax is the bad one to dry. Very low heat or else it catches fire easily. I've also heard that sunflowers are very bad, but we don't have the heat to grow them commercially here. You did it right though...shut ...

Blinds on the windows may be drawn, but you may still be able to see the flickering of flames around the edges or between slats on verticals/venetian blinds. I still say get someone up to those windows! The tripped breaker for the water heater is...

As mentioned, turning the auger backwards is a last-case scenario. Typically, the flighting will have pinched veins shut...bleeding may be minimal until you start turning. Cut through the auger tube high enough to avoid the limb. Typically 1.5 ti...

yah...same here East of you. If we are doing traffic control or just on the roadside "observing", we need to be in the vest. If we're working the mva, we need full turnout gear/no vest. If its a grass/forest fire, no need to wear them in the hot z...
