Basic Rural Water Shuttle Ops [8]

As some fire departments still struggle to move water efficiently in rural environments, Wayne Eder explains the basics and benefits of the rural water shuttle, addressing safety issues, nurse tenders, drafting operations, portable tanks, dump valves, training and more.

“Ready, Set, Go!” Pilot Program Results [10]

With the population of the wildland/urban interface increasing, it’s important to prepare residents for the event of wildfire in or near their neighborhoods. As Chief Bob Roper and Lucian Deaton explain, the IAFC’s Ready, Set, Go! pilot program researched ways to educate the public and connect with them regarding wildfire preparedness and safety.

Company Officers & Paradoxical Decision-Making [13]

Ray Gayk discusses the idea that officers who appear to contradict themselves in their decisions or actions are really most likely acting on information that they’re privy to while others aren’t. He discusses the difficulty associated with making decisions that will be unpopular with some, and suggests thinking of actions or decisions as paradoxical rather than contradictory. He then describes paradoxical leadership styles or decision-making styles, such as being both flexible and consistent when adhering to policy.

  • In the rural environment, the portable tank is your best friend. Framed tanks are better for structure fires or large-flow operations. Additionally, drafting is a simple process that, when done in the proper context, works well for our needs. [8]
Many progressive fire departments still rely on “nurse tenders,” in which a water tender pulls in and pumps directly to an engine company, providing a continuous supply of water until the tender runs dry. [8]
The simplest way to empty your water tender is via the dump valve. Many dump valves are capable of unloading water tenders up to 3,500 gallons in less than 4 minutes. [8]

  • In 2010, the IAFC’s Ready, Set Go! (RSG) program worked with nine pilot departments across the United States to gain a better understanding of WUI communities and how best to communicate with the residents in those communities. Engaging in a dialogue ultimately protects both residents and firefighters, because it facilitates early evacuation and preparedness. Photo Keith Cullom

One of the major goals of the RSG program was to provide guidance and tools that any department can use to teach people the basics of defensible space. When done properly, defensible space successfully saves homes from the destruction of fire. Photo courtesy Firewise [10]

Tactics for Power-Sliding Rear Windows [25]

Over the past couple of years, the rescue community has placed considerable emphasis on new vehicle technology and how it affects our vehicle extrication tactics. One advancement that has gone relatively unnoticed is the addition of a power-sliding rear window to many trucks.

Keeping in Step with the Mission [30]

Editor-in-Chief Tim Sendelbach describes a recent visit to a station that, while routine, exhibited the patient way many firefighters are going about their jobs, despite negative coverage in the press and growing resentment among the public.

Gear Test: Buddy Covers’ Blackout Cover [32]

Greg Jakubowski tests Buddy Covers’ Blackout Cover for use in SCBA blackout training—a classic, time-tested drill that often involves either overly simplistic methods (like using aluminum foil) to complicated and potentially dangerous methods (like filling a room with smoke). Fortunately, Jakubowski found the Blackout Cover to be just right—durable, easy to use and inexpensive.

2010 LODD Stats Offer Mixed News [37]

Following the release of the provisional statistics on 2010 LODDs, Jane Jerrard analyzes the numbers, finding that there’s good news (the numbers are down) and bad news (many deaths were clearly preventable), and goes straight to best safety minds in the fire service—Ron Siarnicki, Billy Goldfeder and Rich Marinucci—for advice as to what the fire service can do to keep the numbers headed downward.

Promoting Women in the Fire Service [47]

After a female reader writes in, explaining that she is getting the cold shoulder from her BC now that she let him know that she’s planning to test for captain, Nozzlehead explains why he might be threatened by her, and offers advice about how everyone should approach gender and diversity issues in the fire service.
