Tile Roof Tactics & Considerations, Part 1 [7]

The construction industry has greatly evolved over the years and continues to do so. The fire service is therefore challenged to develop tactics that properly respond to those changes. As Randy Frassetto explains, one change that has come about is the introduction of tile roofing materials, both clay and concrete, in both traditional and lightweight construction. He further explains how to approach a fire that involves these materials.

The Tech Transformation [9]

Since the release of NFPA 1901, the fire apparatus industry has experienced a steady stream of technological enhancements, most in the interest of firefighter safety. Bob Vaccaro reviews some of these new features.

Gear Test: Fire Axe Inc.’s Flat-Head & Pick-Head Axes [11]

With all of the technological advancements flooding the fire service these days, it can be difficult to remember what it was like before the technology was available. Randy Frassetto discovers that one tool, the firefighter’s axe by Fire Axe Inc., remains true to form, untouched by technology, and is still one of the most important, reliable tools on the fireground.

  • Earlier this year, a vehicle accident along Southern California’s Highway 101 left a car dangling over a 100' drop near Santa Barbara. Seeing this incident made me question both my physical capabilities and mental preparation—but it also inspired me to better myself when it comes to certain extrication tactics ... like rope rescue tactics. Train on various ways in which all rescue and safety equipment can be lowered/shuttled to the location where the rescue and extrication will take place. This will be very difficult and time-consuming, but it’s better to get this crucial piece of the puzzle taken care of now and NOT at the scene of the auto accident at 3 a.m. Additionally, I highly recommend setting/securing your auto extrication and safety equipment in a Stokes-style basket. Make the Cut

    Extrication: Know the Ropes [12]

When it comes to extrication incidents, rescuers must have a basic knowledge of rope rescue equipment, how to safely set up a low-angle/descent rescue rope line, and how to utilize it effectively while carrying rescue tool and extrication equipment.

Cognitive Dissonance in the Fire Service [17]

There are times when we know a behavior is risky or unsafe but we rationalize that it’s still the right thing to do. In the fire service, this “cognitive dissonance” can have fatal implications.

Why We Have a Responsibility to Commit to Firefighter Safety [25]

Battalion Chief Matt Tobia shares the moving story and photo of a child “meeting” his grandfather—who died in the line of duty—by visiting his grave.

Pierce Builds Two Unique Vehicles for Broward County, Fla. [34]

Broward County is a unique department in many respects, operating under the auspices of the Broward Sheriff’s Office. And its apparatus needs are unique as well, as demonstrated by two recent purchases.

The State of Hazmat Response in the Fire Service [44]

Fire-based hazmat response—while still relatively new to the fire service—is now firmly established. So what do the next few years hold for hazmat teams? Dr. Chris Weber takes a look.

Temporary Refuge Area Considerations and Options [59]

Escape routes and safety zones are among the most important safety elements firefighters have when fighting a wildland or wildland/urban interface fire. But as Jerry Burke and Kelley Gouette point out, when these elements become blocked or overrun with fire, a preplanned, temporary refuge area can provide firefighters with a short-term, life-saving alternative.

Working Out with a Strength Sled [69]

The strength sled has become a popular workout tool, and its versatility makes it simple and easy for firefighters to use. Monte Egherman discusses some of the many ways firefighters can work out with the sled, and highlights exercises for certain muscle groups.

The Impact of Staffing Reductions [81]

A reader is looking for ways to influence local politicians about the importance of not reducing department staffing. Nozzlehead stresses that the best way to do so is to lay out the facts—and let them produce the emotions.

Strategies for Obtaining Fire Prevention Educational Materials [88]

Educational materials can expose at risk groups to valuable information. A question emerges regarding how best to acquire those materials. Here, Jim Crawford looks at the pros and cons of buying and developing materials.
