Incorporating Volunteers into Search and Rescue [7]

Fire departments are often called to assist in missing person, large-animal rescue and weather-related responses. But departments that are short on funding may lack resources to adequately respond to these calls. Tim Bonno and Paul Ross report on a volunteer approach to search and rescue that has proven successful for the Eureka (Mo.) Fire Protection District.

Use Personal Failure as an Opportunity to Demonstrate Leadership [10]

None of us like to fail. But as leaders in a high-stress, high-risk profession, we all will. Editor-in-Chief Tim Sendelbach underscores that times of personal failure are excellent opportunities to demonstrate our core leadership values by taking ownership and doing what we can to right the wrong.

  • In tower ladder operations where the tower bucket is equipped with two nozzles, use caution when attempting to use both nozzles at the same time. You really need a strong water supply to produce two good streams with the needed fire flow to reach the seat of the fire. Remember that one good stream is better than two poor ones. Photo Glen Ellman [16]
Note how much stronger the stream appears to be by using only one of the tower’s nozzles. Photo Glen Ellman [16]
When using an automatic nozzle on an aerial master stream, make sure you don’t just rely on the appearance of the stream to estimate fire flow. Automatics were designed to give a stream reach even when you lack flow or when they are under-pumped. Use a flow meter and have some guidelines for your operators to use to take full advantage of this important piece of equipment. Photo Glen Ellman [16]

Tips for Using Aerial Master Streams [16]

Big fires often require the use of aerial ladder master streams. But without consistent practice, these devices are often not used to their full advantage. Capt. Homer Robertson provides some tips.

Wielding Influence to Keep Your Crew Safe [24]

When firefighters take the oath to protect citizens, they also swear to protect one another. Yet too often we fail to enforce the practices and take the stands that will ensure our brothers and sisters go home.

Engaging Firefighters in Community Risk Reduction [41]

Fire prevention leaders have long struggled to engage firefighters in prevention. But recent programs initiated by the IAFF to build long-term support for community risk reduction just might provide the impetus needed.

Gear Test: NewCal’s FatIvan Door Chock [47]

One way to ensure safe and proper ingress and egress is to simply hold a door open by means of a wedge. But, as Chad Allison explains, some chocks aren’t as reliable as others, and can easily be kicked out of place, rendering them useless. As an alternative to less reliable chocks, Allison reviews the FatIvan door chock.

According to researchers, some departments avoid using CAFS on structure fires because they think they would be pumping air onto the fire. This is not true. When high-energy air is added to the solution, its effectiveness is increased. Photo Jeff Hall [55]

Study To Investigate the Use of CAFS in Structure Fires [55]

Although compressed-air foam systems (CAFS) have been widely accepted in the wildland arena, the same cannot be said for structural firefighting. Jane Jerrard interviews researchers and advisory board members involved in a study on CAFS interior structural firefighting capabilities to try to determine why CAFS has not been embraced by structural firefighters.

  • Even if most or all of your district is equipped with standard hydrants, the potential always exists for the water supply system to malfunction or provide a supply that simply can’t match the required fire flow for the given incident. In these cases, drafting may provide the only alternative to getting the water needed for the firefight. Photo AP/Jimmy May [65]
Ensure that your dry hydrants are standardized. Older dry hydrants may have 4½" or 5" fittings, while newer ones may be equipped with 6" fittings to complement the hard sleeves that fit today’s larger pumps. Photo courtesy Lingohocken Fire Company [65]
The Tokyo Fire Department (and other departments in Japan) uses cisterns extensively for water supply, so many of their engines are set up with squirrel-tail suctions to facilitate drafting from them. Photo courtesy Greg Jakubowski [65]
If your department uses tanker shuttles with dump tanks, you’ll need low-level strainers that can use the maximum capacity of the dump tanks. In some departments, the low-level strainers are carried on the tankers and left at the dump site, which allows any engine with the proper size suction hose to operate there.Photo courtesy Lingohocken Fire Company [65]

    Drafting Tools & Techniques [65]

Water is probably the most important extinguishing agent used by the fire service. But what if your response area has few, if any, working hydrants? Or what if something happens to your municipal water supply? Greg Jakubowski discusses how to prepare for water supply issues by conducting a drafting operation. He also discusses their challenges and the tools you’ll need to perform a draft successfully.

  • The appropriate amount of lighting on an apparatus comes down to how the lights are being used: 1) to get attention and gain the right of way; or 2) as a warning when stationary so we (or others on the scene) don’t get struck. [75]
    Nozzlehead

Apparatus Debate: Too Many Warning Lights? [75]

When a reader writes to Nozzlehead, explaining that he feels that we have too many warning lights on fire apparatus, Nozzlehead offers him a piece of his mind, arguing that there’s hardly such a thing as “too many lights” when it comes to responding but that there can be too many lights when apparatus are stationary and simply need to convey caution to passing motorists.
