Wildland/Urban Interface (WUI)

Weather Monitoring in the WUI [7]

Many factors must be considered when fighting a wildland or wildland/urban interface fire. Weather is one factor that can be monitored several weeks or even months before a fire starts. Chuck Sallade describes the key elements involved in weather monitoring, such as weather meters, lookouts and spot reports. He also suggests ways to get crewmembers interested in following the weather.

Apparatus Developments in 2011 & Beyond [12]

Apparatus editor Bob Vaccaro reaches out to the major manufacturers for the latest information related to new features, how they’re addressing firefighter safety and the long-term trends they see in the industry.

Weather meters allow you to cross-reference the overall weather forecast with the current weather conditions at your specific location. You can also track trends that will affect the fire’s behavior, such as drops in relative humidity, wind speed and direction changes, temperature fluctuations, etc. (Photo Tom Story) [7]

  • Crimson’s Transformer provides ergonomically designed compartments in which the equipment can be easily accessed, with an array of pull-out trays, shelves and equipment mounts. [12]
E-One’s e-Max features more compartment space, better maneuverability and topside coffin compartments. [12]
KME’s new PRO cab, built on the Predator chassis, features a short wheelbase and narrow electronic pump panel. [12]
Ferrara’s Ultra cab and chassis are featured on five new heavy-rescues delivered to FDNY with stainless-steel cabs and bodies. [12]
The Pierce Dash CF, built on the PUC, features increased visibility and room on the interior. The chassis allows for a lower step height for entrance and egress to the cab. [12]

What to Expect at FRI 2011 [34]

FRI has long been considered an event that can help propel fire officers to the next level of success. Here, Chief Byron Kennedy explains what the IAFC has in store for FRI 2011, including exciting educational sessions and a host of new features.

  • The second-due engine company has several important duties on the fireground, including stretching a back-up line into the structure if and when needed. This line will support the initial attack line and protect the first-due hose team from fire moving behind them as they enter the structure. This line also serves as a safety line in the event that the initial hoseline loses water. (Photo Bill Tompkins/www.btfirephotos.com)

As this photo demonstrates, the second-due engine should be positioned close to the fire building so it can stretch a back-up line to assist the first-due engine, but it should not block the truck company. (Photo FIREGROUND 360°/www.fireground360.com) [36]
    Fire Attack

    Second-Due Engine Duties [36]

Everyone is familiar with the basic functions of the first-due engine company. But what about the second-due engine? What are their duties? Mike Kirby and Tom Lakamp review the basic tasks assigned to the second-due engine, discussing hose size and length, water supply and hoseline placement.

  • Fire Prevention

Tragedy Sparks Innovative Community Outreach Campaign [38]

Unfortunately, fatal fires are often what it takes to drive changes to the building code. But Jim Crawford looks at another way tragedy can spur change: by bringing the community members together with the fire department in a shared educational initiative.

  • The Back Step

Paying Back Those Who Helped You Become a Fire Service Leader [43]

In his first “The Back Step” column, Chief Matt Tobia notes that most successful firefighters and officers have many leaders to thank for supporting them and pushing them toward success. He explains that rather than focusing on how to repay these individuals, we should focus on paying it forward, having the same influence on the next generation.

  • When using the spreader to create space for the cutter to sever vehicle components, there are times when the access is limited and the visibility of the components is poor. In this situation, the cutter operator should feel for the cutter pulling into the cut to confirm that the tips are set around the hinges. (Photo Ryan McDonald) [50]
    In-Depth Extrication

Extrication Tactics: Are You a Butcher or a Surgeon? [50]

Understanding why our tools react the way they do is critical to safe operations on the extrication scene. In this In-Depth Extrication column, Les Baker describes how best to use your hydraulic cutter.

  • The IC at an extrication scene has myriad duties and, therefore, must stay calm. This is one of many reasons why structure and a systematic approach is so vital to a successful operation. Photo Courtesy Gig Habor Fire & Medic One [52]
    Make the Cut

Understanding the IC Role at Extrications [52]

The incident commander at an extrication scene is a key role, essentially running the show. In his Make the Cut column, Todd Meyer explains what the IC should do on scene, focusing on establishing structure, running NIMS where necessary, operating from a distraction-free location and coordinating with other agencies.

  • If you’re in too much of a hurry when bunking out, it can result in things such as one or both of your suspenders hanging below your coat. This provides two loops that can catch on anything. Company officers should reinforce the proper wearing of PPE, no matter how harmless the little things seem. Photo Glen Ellman [57]
The waist belt is the most important strap on your SCBA. It must be tightly secured to function appropriately. If it’s loose, it creates a loop that can catch on many things. Photo Homer Robertson [57]

    Quick Drills

    Training for SCBA Entanglement [57]

Your SCBA is your lifeline, but if it’s tangled in wires and preventing you from moving forward, it can seem like the opposite. Homer Robertson reviews the hazards of SCBA snags on the fireground and provides some drills for dealing with them.
