Fire Attack

Tactics for Battling Attic Fires [7]

Attic fires present significant collapse danger and can be difficult to extinguish due to limited access. Greg Jakubowski presents some tips for ensuring you stay in control at an attic fire.

By Greg Jakubowski [8]

Technical Rescue in Storm Drains [9]

Andy Speier discusses several of the hazards and challenges rescuers will encounter when entering a storm drain system to conduct search and rescue operations.

Best Practices for Tornado Response [11]

Chief Mike Walker of the Oklahoma City Fire Department shares best practices for tornado response, built on years of experience in responding to such incidents.

  • Fires in attic space, no matter the size of the structure, can be tricky; therefore, firefighters must consider several key elements, such as how to confirm the fire’s location, the contents of the attic, building construction, access stairs, and hose and nozzle selections, just to name a few. (Photo Rick Gould) [7]
Venting the attic is key to accessing it. If you can’t open the roof safely, open gable ends if they’re present. A chainsaw can widen the gable end opening if necessary, creating a “window” to the attic. (Photo Cary Ulrich) [7]
Choose a robust hoseline for attic fires; in my book, 1¾" is nice, but 2" is better. (Photo Mike Coppola) [7]

  • A rescue team may need to enter a storm drain to perform a recovery or to remove a trapped individual, but if not properly prepared for the challenges of this type of confined space, rescuers could easily become injured or in need of medical attention. (Photo Andy Speier) [9]
A pre-rigged 4:1 haul system or cable winch on a tripod set up above the manhole will ensure safe passage up or down. Here, line tenders monitor the progress of the entry team members using tag lines. (Photo Chief Steve North)

During the storm drain search operation, the water was three feet deep at the point of entry, but two fire pumps were unable to keep up with the flow. Remember: Don’t underestimate the power of flowing water, and be sure to wear appropriate thermal protection when needed. (Photo Chief Steve North)

    Big-Rig Extrication Tips & Tactics [45]

Accidents involving big rigs are daunting incidents for first responders. There are a host of unique extrication factors to consider, including those related to stabilization, load types, vehicle construction and other hazards. Todd Meyer offers tips for big rig extrications.

  • Quick Drills

Use “Recipe” Cards to Enhance Training [69]

When it comes to training, volunteer departments struggle with time limitations. In this Quick Drills, Homer Robertson introduces a form of training that fits better for adult learners and allows members to train on their own time throughout the month.

Gear Test: SurvivalStraps’ Survival Bracelet and Survival Belts [75]

After testing SurvivalStraps’ Survival Bracelet, Belt and general 550 cord, Andy Speier reports that the products would be great to have during rescue emergencies, as they can be deployed quickly and can be doubled up to form descent-control devices. Also, a portion of the proceeds go to a good cause.

    By the Numbers [83]

Research conducted in UL’s Northbrook, Ill., facilities examined fire service ventilation practices, combined with fire behavior involving modern home construction and furnishings. The conclusion: There are major changes happening in the residential fire environment and, as such, firefighters need to reexamine their tactics, especially those related to ventilation.

Tough Times Ahead for Fire Departments [86]

After a reader writes to Nozzlehead explaining that he is being too negative about how the economic crisis has affected fire departments, Nozzlehead tries to address the reality of station shut-downs, brownouts, declining volunteer numbers, etc., and offers ideas for how the fire service can help change the public’s perspective.
