Fire Prevention

Turn Tragic Incidents into Public Education [8]

Disasters, or smaller incidents that have tragic outcomes, can be valuable moments to spread the prevention message. But we must choose our words carefully.

Quick Drills

Mitigating Electrical Hazards on the Fireground [10]

Downed power lines are an extreme danger on the fireground, but other less-obvious hazards exist as well. Captain Homer Robertson reviews some of electrical safety training tips and provides two drills for your crew.

Going Beyond "We Will Never Forget" [12]

The fire service often uses the phrase, "We will never forget" to commemorate those who have died in the line of duty. But the lessons from LODDs will be forgotten if concrete changes in tactics aren't made.

  • Be sure to notify your IC that you have a power line down, and then have a member stay with it to keep others away from it. Distance equals safety when dealing with downed wires. Photo Glen Ellman [10]
The only thing you need to know about above-ground transformers: "If they're damaged, they're dangerous." This is one for the pros to handle. If your crew encounters a transformer involved at a wreck scene, use discipline and wait for the power provider to shut down the service. Photo Homer Robertson [10]

Gear Test: Mystery Ranch's Firelight Pack [14]

Chuck Sallade reviews four of Mystery Ranch’s fireline packs—the Hot Top, Hot 3, Hot Spot and Firelight—explaining that the packs’ unique and comfortable harness system set them apart from other manufacturer’s packs. He also conducts a thorough review of the Firelight pack, noting that it is fully adjustable, durable, comfortable and spacious.

Tour of Duty Runners Remember 9/11 [16]

In honor of the 343 firefighters and thousands of civilians who perished on 9/11, a group of 36 runners from the United States and Australia ran across the country, from Santa Monica, Calif., to Ground Zero in New York City.

    Firefighter Families Workin' Together [19]

When members of the same family work together at a department, their personal matters can affect a department’s operational side on a few different levels.

    Truck Company Operations

Every Truck Crew Needs to Create a Search Plan [23]

Jim McCormack addresses what every truck crew should know about search operations, hitting on the need for a pre-arrival search plan, how to conduct a “search size-up,” high-target search areas and how to divide up teams and duties.

  • Commercial strip-mall fires pose significant challenges to the engine company officer. Everything from the age of the structure to building construction to the fire load to building access is very site-specific and must therefore be incorporated into the incident action plan (IAP). Much thought should also be given to needed and available resources. If the IAP and responding resources aren't thoroughly planned out, a strip-mall fire can quickly grow out of control. Photo Michael Schwartzberg [25]
The engine should be positioned so that crews can take full advantage of the apparatus-mounted deck gun, but crews should also leave room for an aerial platform to be positioned in the front of the building. Photo Bill Strite [25]
The large open areas inherent in strip malls provide the potential for a large, unconfined fire; therefore, the standard hose/nozzle combination deployed should be a 2«" hoseline with a 1 1/8" or 1¬" tip. Photo Courtesy Ontario (Calif.) Fire Department [25]
Considering the various types of security measures taken at strip malls, be ready for anything when trying to gain entry into the rear of these occupancies. The rear doors are often the most heavily fortified doors you'll face. Photo Bill Strite [25]
    Fire Attack

The Challenges & Tactics Associated with Strip-Mall Fires [25]

Due to the sheer size of commercial strip malls, firefighters must fully understand what they’re up against and the proper tactics to employ. Mike Kirby and Tom Lakamp address some of those challenges, such as building construction and potential fire load, and suggest ways to overcome those challenges, such as preplanning, selecting the right hose/nozzle combination and knowing the different construction types.

    Survival of the Fittest

Frightening Health Trends and How You Can Avoid Them [28]

Health and fitness, particularly in the fire service, are serious issues. A sedentary lifestyle not only threatens a firefighter’s ability to do their job, it also sends the wrong message to the community. Jeff and Martha Ellis discuss the long-lasting effects of a sedentary lifestyle, and offer steps to take when trying to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
