Researchers in the fire service are approaching the issue of firefighter tracking on the fireground from various directions. In this second of a series of interviews from the WPI's sixth annual Firefighter International Workshop on Precision Indoor Personnel Location and Tracking Technology, FireRescue Editor-in-Chief Tim Sendelbach sits down with MSA's Ben Mauti to discuss its progress in firefighter tracking. MSA's approach uses inertial navigation, which measures firefighters' actual movements and creates position information based on that movement--creating a type of "breadcrumb trail" that shows where the firefighter was and where he is now. The position information is then sent to the IC at the command post. MSA tested this technology during a RIT scenario at the workshop.
