Im a line officer with a small rural volunteer dept. Recently it was brought to my attention that some of my guys are getting bored with training. Does anyone have any new training ideas that may catch the attention of my dept?

Hey there! I like to get my guys doing something different by putting our full gear, SCBA included, and cleaning out trucks inside and out! Great for using the packs if you don't get to practice with them often. I am currently working on a Mock disaster with our neighboring department that sometimes responds with us from time to time and vice versa, involving a MVA.... jaws of life practice....... Great fun if you get get your hands on a few wrecked cars.
Hope it was a bit of help......

Mix it up some with hands-on training and classroom. A simple hands-on session could be as easy as everyone standing (or sitting) in a circle with their bunker pants on. One by one, each member empties his/her pockets and explains the use for each tool or object they carry and why they carry it. If time permits, have each member demonstrate the tool or object as well.
A simple classroom exercise I've used is a game of Jeopardy. I have a template on PowerPoint and create each game based on recent training. Each category can be as easy or as hard as you want. I've even made games with just the streets in my town. Catergories were Dead Ends, One ways, etc. Use your imagination.

Is there a possiblity of sharing the Jeopardy template with others? I have been trying to find a similar approach for my department but have come up empty-handed... Thanks...

Both movies are terrific but I would have to say that Ladder 49 is my favorite.

Great topic, and your procedures are pretty similar to ours. I would add something about the driver rolling down his/her window before backing to be able to hear verbal warnings from bystanders. I know that the back-up person should have everythi...
