Hi, I just got accepted into the fire academy here in Orlando, Florida. I will be starting FFI in Oct., I have my NREMT already so that is why Im not taking the EMT part. What would anyone suggest as a way to get fit or stay fit for the academy? Routines and programs of all sorts are welcome! Thanks

Be flexible enough to have something to keep everyone busy. Like: You guys work on patient handling (cause you aint never going to fight fire) you five can do preplanning (so the "Big One" does'nt come as a shock to us) and the rest of us will work on pump ops (because we are trying to get qualified on the engine). OR: Split up into groups of 3-4 people (especially rookies), pick a truck, all stand in front of a compartment and discuss what you believe is inside and how its all used, open the door to make sure you got it right and do some hands-on, move to next compartment. Worked for me.

Another training we did is our Ex Capt in full bunker gear and masked up a 2 man team grab a crosslay run about 30 yards straight stream our target run back open the door of the burn building dragging 1 3/4" charged line to an objective finding objective dragging it out following the hoseline. (Note the room is pitchblack and smoked.) crawling back in to the nozzle and uncharging the line and bringing the line back out

A great idea my chief has recently came up with is Night Training. I live in a rural area not well lit so we are going to have night training with only the fire by light no scene lights just for the challenge to get tools and anything else off the truck we have a burn building we have to do a primary search with our irons find our objective

This Saturday we did a drill (Jen & Brit's Idea) We hid SCBAs and sent in a team with mask on and hood covering so we couldn't see-Did a search like normal-When we came to a SCBA one of the team would put it on blind-Mind u we have members that like to make things hard when training-Straps pulled up, tied in knots,-U know what i am saying-Then the rest of the search would be on air-I was perfect-U get search training and test your skills on the SCBA if u need to work with it when in a bad spot!

Hey to all. Just wanted to share an idea that is used in my department to hopefully benifit yours. In the summer months, we take an engine and a crew to the school parking lot, its big and its open. The crew dons full PPE, Including SCBA, breathing air and when the parking break sets, they come off the rig and advance a handline. once it is stretched they stay on air and pack it back and do it again until the first person runs out of air. It builds great teamwork and enhances speed, endurance, and effectiveness throughout.

I think that most firefighters need a lot of traning in packing up its the most danger in firefighting I would like to do more in our own fire dept.
