My path is yet unknown. I am a mom of 3 boys. I decided that my boyz racetrack needed and EMT. So I went through school. LOVED IT! Been in the medical field all my life and finally found a career, not just a job. Only there are not very many ambulance companies out there. I have been leaded in a way towards firefighting which was shocking to me since all I ever wanted to do was medical. I have a friend that works in the Penryn FD and I already talked to the captain about volunteering. All I have to do is go down there. My problem is, do I have what it takes, is it the road for me??? Im not the healthiest person in the world or the strongest but I sit here not doing anything about it......dont know what I am expecting to get back on my topic but anything will be great! thanks

All of you are absolutely AWESOME! I have gotten so many replies and good advice. I will update next week after I take my applications in to both the fire dept and Medic Ambulance.........Thank you again and be safe!

Awww that was very sweet! I absolutely have the heart, Im just hoping I can do the job on a physical level. I absolutely adore children and look up to people like you who put others first in their life and who put their life in your hands. Its been 6 months now putting apps in to the ambulance companys and it scares me that I will forget my DCAPBTLS or miss a step in my assesments, like the A in the ABC'S! lol Im so relieved to hear of all the women who are firefighters and it eases my mind a little. And I too wish you well and to come home safely.

Well work as an EMT and volunteer as a firefighter. You're not comparing jobs so it's a no lose situation. You will have your job in the medical field and the fire department will be your hobby.

Hi Jeff, well I have applied to the 2 ambulance company's in the area the last 3 months, AMR and First Responder. I have found another company in this area, Medic. My goal this week is to apply with Medic and fill out the application for a volunteer position with the Penryn Fire Dept. Im very excited to move forward and to hopefully accept the first job Im offered, weather its a volunteer or paid position. Thanks for the reply =)

At the risk of repeating everyone else, you won't know until you try. It sounds like you have the passion for it, and you aren't afraid of hard work, so you already have a leg-up on other people who have no clue what it takes.
While you don't have to be a world-class athlete to fight fires, it certainly helps if you lead a (somewhat) healthy lifestyle: nutritious diet, less tobacco/alcohol use, some form of physical activity, and so on. This reduces the chance of contracting the number-one killer of firefighters: heart disease.
My wife and I are both firefighters, and it's drawn us even closer to each other. We have jumped out of bed at 2 A.M. when the tones dropped for a car accident, or waited at the firehouse on standby at the request of a neighboring department while our dinner languished on the stove.
We also know of another woman who is a line officer in her department. Go for it, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Its so neat to hear how both you and your wife are firefighters. Very exciting! Im not afraid of the hard work, more of failing. But like you and alot of others said, I have nothing to loose and everything to gain. Now I just gotta quit smoking again! lol and start jogging.......again. Thank you for the reply and be safe, to you and your wife.

Being relative new to the fire service myself. I have only been in for four years. I can see where the nervousness can come into play. But, like others that have posted before me have said. You don't know unless you try. I know that with my department there are members that simply do not go inside. In-fact that is one of the things that we discuss with potential members is that not everyone that joins our department is required to "go in". There are many jobs to be done on a fire ground that need to be accomplished other that go inside. Scene support plays a huge part. I wish you the best of luck in trying this new endeavor.

By going inside, you mean fire right? Im so excited to see what I can do! =) Thanks for the reply and the encouragement.

We are working on a petition for Congress. We are looking ti create a Public Safety Memorial Day to honor Police/Fire/EMS who have fallen in the line of duty. Especially those of September 11th. We are not looking for glory. Just remember.
