I was appointed as our volunteer fire department's Incident Safety Officer based on 40+ years in the fire service, experience, and training. I do not deal with health and wellness issues. I hold the rank of Captain, but am not supposed to be a fireground officer (but sometimes.....we do what we have to do). I report directly to the Fire Chief or IC, but can overrule them if and when I see the need to from a safety standpoint. Instead of overruling, I stop the action that I believe unsafe and immediately confer with the IC to find a safer way to perform the operation. I have no formal Safety Officer training, but an working on becoming a certified ISO through the Fire Department Safety Officers Association and am currently studying David W. Dodson's 2nd edition of "Fire Department Incident Safety Officer."
