I would have to think that if you could buy the time back you might want to check the Feds for secondary employment. Check with USAJOBS.gov The site is self directed and with some of your back ground might be good for some of the jobs offered. It allows you to work on the seconf pension in eight years. You might check with a financial planner for a better answer as talking to firemen we all know a little abut a lot. Best of luck on any way you go.

I turn 55 on January 24th... As a career firefighter in the state of Calilfornia, this means that I am eligible to retire, once turning 55 at 3% for each year of service. I have the option of buying back some time that I already have on the books prior to working for the department I've been with for the past 28 years. I thought I'd ask if anyone out there was in this position and how they made decisions. If I have enough years (33) I conceivable could get 99.9% of my salary for retirement but at this point I'm almost at 84%. I know that when you retire, you do so in March to get the 3% COLA added on. I've still got kids in school and can't conceive of the idea of not going to work at this point. Am I missing anything here?
My best, Mike

Luck has little to do with retirement. A good retirement is when planning and hard work combine to give you a better time in retirement. I have found that you need to be involved in something or ya go to sead. Like te good book say's
those with out a vision will perish. Well mine is to see my son off to school and to have enough money to play with the wife in a no snow kinda place. I found that its nice to have the time to pick another job that I love as much as Firefighting. OK right now still looking

Well, my father got a great job after his 30 some year carrer in the fire service. He was a firefighter since 15 and until 42, then he became chief for 6 years. Now, he works for the Federal Government in FEMA, so I'm thinking thats just a lucky retirement =) but hey, if you have any "reasonable" options i'd love to know also.

I would like to see how guys are getting ready for that day. Its a young mans game and unless your ready your up the creek with out the paddle. I think that the ob of firefighter has one thing for job security as its usually based on human stupidity. We might live in peace but people will still screw up. The question is what else provides that security? Maybe the foreclosure market!

Hey guys and gals, at the end of a long and highly successful career, we're all sure to "end it" and retire from the fire service. What are some of the concerns you know about or have that could effect us all?

For the old timers who have already gone on ahead of us, what should be be doing and looking at as we draw closer to retirement?

The fire service has always taught that you leave it better than you found it! We'd sure like to know what others know in the lift after the fire service.

Fraternally - Dave
