Does PESH or OSHA require NY firefighters to have a yearly physical or does the questionaire under 29cfr1910.134 cover this. Our department is having a battle over this. I feel our interior FF's should have them yearly.

PESH enforces OSHA standards on the fire departments. They follow 29CFR1910.134 so you get cleared by your medical director to wear an SCBA. This usually requires a physical.

Having a physical should not kill you ,but help you .. If your like me in your 40s why not !! Iwas in a dept . in upstate N.Y. and I would do it just because you never know !! as a driver it really wont hurt . as far as interior FF depends on age . if your 18-30 , you should every 2 yrs, 30 and up every year unless you have problems . We all know what those are .. It should not have to be an OSHA regulayion , but part of your SOPs and SOGs.. My brothers and sisters lets take care of ourselfs.. be safe and strong

Our Chief has our FF's fill out a medical questionaire each year and calls it good. Apparently our physician signs off on everyone. I've been here 5 years and nobody has had a physical unless they just joined. Many of our interior guys don't want physicals because there may be restriction placed on them due to their physical condition. I guess they would rather just take the gamble. Unfortunately it will be me dragging them out!

This is one thing I think should be mandatory but sadly is not. It could save your life and maybe more.

If we cant be teams of specialists, we may have a real problem being teams. Its tuff to imagine having the luxury of turning specialist away because they have no real interest in becoming everthing to everybody. We need to recognize them and we ev...
