i grew up in my fire department. born and raised there and practically lived there my whole childhood and even now. mostly all of the guys at the satation now have known me ever since i was born or atleast a few years old and i grew up with them all just like they where my actual family. we all hang out together at the station and outside the station and its great to know i have big brothers who love me, care for me, will protect me, and will fallow me into the depths of hell and back out again.

The idea of this, Captain Busy, is or those of us who do not do this professionally. To us, it isn't work. Plus, you also need to consider the fact that 3 out of 4 members of my family belong to the fire company, so it isn't as though I never see them. My guys are not just my fellow firefighters, they have become part of my family. Maybe things are different coming from a paid guy's perspective, but to the people from my station, we know what it is to practically be family the way we are. If anyone can't understand that, then it's a shame that they'll never understand the kind of off-kilter family that is the fire department.

just to add a little perspective here... I don't think you will ever see someone on their death bed saying, "gee, I wish I would have spent more time at work..." If you have a family and you spend more time at work than you do at home, then in my opinion, you have to really take a step back and reevaluate your priorities. Your family needs you, they should always be your number one priority in life. If you have no life, then hanging at the station 24/7 is sad but what the heck, you've got nothing else going on anyway. When things get really bad, it's your family that will always be there. You cannot say that about your co-workers... because typically, they have a life.
