I have a quick question for someone out there more muzzleloader salve than I have. I am looking to see what you would recommend for amount of powder and grain of bullet for a CVA hunterbolt 50 caliver Magnum. My longest shot (it's scoped) would only be about 60 yards. Last year I used pyrodex pellets for the first time (100 grains) but never got to shoot at any deer. (saw one but the safety made way too much noise and I never got a shot)
Based on the rifle I have, what would you recommend? SERIOUS answers only please. Opinions are cool, but I don't want to take someone for their word and blow my gun up or my arm off. Thanks :)

I shoot a CVA Hawken 50 cal. Here in Wisconsin we are not allowed to use a scope that magnifies so I shoot iron sights. I hunt at the edge of a field and can see 300 yards in the one direction. I have found the best load for me is a 250 gr sabot with 100 gr of Pyrodex RS powder. Sighted in 4 inches high at 100 yards puts it dead to rights at 150 and 10 inches low at 200. The longest shot I have ever taken a deer with it was about 110 yards but its nice to know I can reach out there if I need to. Even at 110 yards it still had enough to go through the shoulder blade and shater ribs, tear through the pump house and shatter another rib on its way out the other side. I looked into going with heavier loades but found going up to 150 gr of powder only gained me about 200 fps and kicked the hell out of me so I decided that was not for me. If your longest shot is only 60 yards you could even drop your powder down to 80 or 90 grains and still have plenty of knock down for a white tail.
happy hunting
