Jess,
Do what is expected of you and dont worry about anybody else but yourself. Let all anti-girl people go they will get theirs. Eat, drink and be merry. Don't let anyone stress you out. They are not worth it. Don't quit no matter how hard something gets figure it out and practice it. This job is not all muscle power it also takes brain power too. Good Luck. If you ever need any help just message me. I will do what I can when I can.

Don't let the guys get to you! Believe it or not but there are some men in the fire service that do not think women belong there. Don't take the easy way out on anything you do. Make sure you do everything just the same as they would! You'll get great respect and if you have an experience like mine. The guy that gives you the most crap and doesn't want you there will end up picking you as his partner because he knows your the best in the class!! lol Good luck!

I'm 18, and I've got both fire one and two, most of my family is in the fire service also.. My words of advice to you is, Don't let people persuade you.. Do what you know how to do.. Learn what you don't know, it's a fun job.. Don't let other people think that you are just like your family who is in the fire service.. Show them who you are, and what you want out of this.. Don't the let "no - girls allowed in the fire house" guys get to you, soon enough they'll realize that you can really perform the task just as they can- but prove to them that you really can! Most of all have FUN!

Hope this helps!
Good Luck, it's truly a blast to do this job! :)

The things the guys will say doesnt bother me! lol i dont tend to pay attention to any of them any how, but what were some things you found particularly challanging? (physically and mentally) i'd like to start working on things i may have trouble with as soon as i can! but yea, im not worried about any one changing my mind or discouraging me... thats why i finally started schooling for this :)

Try your very best to forget that you are a girl. It might be difficult for others around you have to convince the others you are there for the love of the job just like they are, but hang in there and work at your training that much harder. Put on a game face that you can draw inner strength from that allows you to put aside any hangups you might have about the job & just tell yourself you CAN do it, you WILL do it and you will be the very best firefighter & parmedic you can be. I know it sounds kinda corny, but I did that through our 5 month long academy and it worked & continues to serve me out on company now. Good luck & keep us posted on how it goes for you! :)

Ron - Agreed - working in an area with many teaching hospitals we often get well meaning medical folks eager to help or to try their new skills on the street. We inform them if they want to take charge of the scene they must accompany the patient...
