I work at Parris Island and the leathers are allowed if approved by the Chief. (IE they must meet the current standards.) Of our entire department I know of only 1 guy who actually wears one. Personally I think they are too heavy. Our necks take enough of a beating over the years why do more damage?

Crane, Indiana doesnt. Quite honestly, I'd LOVE to be able to slap on a leather at work (I wear one on my volly department at home). But, since we deal with alot of hazmat we're not allowed to have anything leather (boots, helmets, truck belts, etc.) since you cant decon leather.

In reality you should never be wearing leather or other NON-Haz-mat gear in that environment. So that is no excuse. They should provide you with Haz-mat gear..... As I know they probably do.

NAS Brunswick, Maine does, but it's the FF's choice. I'd say close to 1/2 the members have one.

The incident hindered my response by a minute or so which could make all of the difference. In this instance - no, I still made the rig (it was an EMS call). However, the "What If" factor plays a key role - the other drivers passing me didn't know...
