Our department is a constantly evolving in its tatics for fire fighter safety. I do belive that we might be one of the first if not one of the few stations in our county to have and use evac tones. We are not yet RIT but we do use some of the RIT training ideas like evrey firefighter is issued webbing for firefighter rescue or civilan rescue. I will say it is great to be part of such a SAFTY minded fluid station.

We have two accountability tags. One is a photo ID and the other is a yellow plastic tag with the member's name and number. The photo tag is for the accountability officer to hold and the yellow tag is for the accountability board and gets moved to the different assignments which the firefighter/officer is assigned to. With every different task done by a firefighter on the fire ground, a PAR is given to command for accountability.

After comming out of a fire, we are to report to rehab before re-entering the structure.

Our Municipal chief recently implemented the 2 in/2 out rule...Two firefighters enter a structure at minimum, as long as two firefighters are outside ready. Kinda like RIT. So, say, me and you are arriving on 10 Engine at a house fire, we can't go in until there's two other maskmen waiting outside ready to go in at any time.

Before the truck moves, there's two blasts of the air horn. That signifies that the truck will be moving and that nobody is to get on or off the truck.

We wear the lime-yellow safety vests when on a roadway.

We have always critiqued after major calls and fire schools.

We're working on obtaining physical fitness equipment now.

Stay safe big guy!! We'll have to hang out sometime.

It boils down to training. You perform the way you train. Get your people in the habit of using safety skills on every training, don't let officers and senior guys skip, and encourage questions.

The Administration of the City of Passaic in Nothern New Jersey goes to great lenghts to support their firefightes safety. Yeah right, they BANNED the use of the firehouse gyms to all firefighters while on duty.
Sarcastic AND truthful!

Ideas to prevent LODD, research, Training and implementation of the knowledge you have should be at the department level and it should be on going process be ahead of the game not behind. At the personal level every Firefighter should strive to take safety into mind. Responding to the station, to the incident, become efficent, become effective and be safe. And implement dietary and physical activites to promote better health Bottom line it starts at a personal level then a department level Be safe and god bless

one more clarification...this happened about 5 years ago. And, yes, we were talked about quite a bit for a while. We made a donation to the VFD in thanks for their service. They still didn't ease up on us though. Now, 5 years later, I am aware of ...

But now that we have your attention.... We don't have a jar or anything like that, but I'm sure you'd be "rode hard" for a little while. Rest assured, you are not the only one that has ever had this happen, and you won't be the last. Use it as a ...

to quote you: "We wouldn't wait for the police if it was a domestic fire - we would put the life of anyone trapped first of course." YOUR safety is first and foremost. Scene safety is #1. Would you agree with that? So is it that bad there that if ...
