We have a two door hummer. It has had no major problems other than the Heater/Defroster. We lifted our hummer for more ground clearance "Done by Hummer" Done correctly. Also we purchased the truck new as a demo, we paid around 67K for it. however we will use this truck for at least twenty years if not longer. So we do get longevity out of it. Our truck is pictured at the top of this page! We have one district just outside our county who still uses a 6x6 they primarily use it as a tanker.

Curious, has your hummer had axle problems ? I was told that many were. Is your Hummer a 4 door . We have a 2 door hummer in a neighboring district and I was amazed at how cramped the seating was

I was one of the folks that believes brush trucks should be cheap. Don't spend $100K on something you are going to tear up off road. In my case the unit we bought was on a grant so while it was costly it didn't cost me a lot. I also wanted something that could be used in the WUI especially since that is what my district consist of. This truck carries lots of hose , 500 gal of water and can pump 490 gpm so for structure protection it is fairly well equipped for a small truck.

The firefighter that was lost in a old 6x6 was the assistant Chief for Animas VFD. His LODD opened a lot of peoples eyes to properly equipped and maintained old trucks. They aren't all gone yet but there are fewer of them in NM at least . Folks are also starting to understand things like GVWR must be taken into account when modifying any rig. Those old 6x6 look really tough and should be able to carry a lot of water but you need to be careful , for one thing the brakes have limitations. it also hard to tell the difference between a 2 1/2 ton and 5 ton unit. The old duece and half can't carry a lot of water before being overweight.

Mark sorry to here about your loss of a FF in the past. It seems to me the big 6x6 would be just to big in the woods, however several folks say they work. As for the unit you have pictured that looks like it is a very well equiped truck and it will manuver in tighter spots more easily. My district has had two fromer military vehicles as brush trucks in the past. The "Safety issues" of those trucks started to become and issue. Our District board purchased a new Hummer Brush unit back in 1997. We love the truck, however we went from one extreme with junk to something over the top. Funny how shtuff works.

FYI we retired our old 6x6 which was a federal surplus unit (not reconditioned) because we loss a FF in an accident with a similar truck and the state folks went crazy trying to get these removed from service. Apparently the main issue is depts were not maintaining them as well as they could and they (2 1/2 tons) were being overloaded
