ok so.. i just wanted another opinion... i was in class and we somehow got on the topic of how i was a female firefighter and all the good we do for the community.. you know the kind of stuff im talking about... when from the front of the class i hear... "women have no place in any fire dept". this guy turns around and looks at me with this demeaning look... as i continue to calmly trying to explain my position.. he continues to provoke me... i could feel myself getting angry and finally i kind of exploded... i said "next time that alarm goes off you can put my turn out gear on and run your ass into the burning buliding... if you dont care to do so... then shut the hell up"... i felt bad after and now i feel like i shouldnt have been so explosive... what do you think? should i apologize?

The way I look at it he was baiting you up to do what you did..This is why you have to be smarter than him.. there will come a time for the get back... Right now prove to him in class that you are more than fit to do the job.. That kills them more.. I think sometimes people get afraid , I think he is a fraid you are going to show him up in class that is where you focus should be is to train harder and do better.. That will kill him more than just blowing up at him.. At this point he wins... Your turn to wi n....
Remember one thing. Actions speak louder than words. He showed that he has an inferiority complex and you showed your immaturity by reacting to this type of caveman mentality.

From the way you made this statement I can see how it might have tipped him off. We all do good for the community. Young, old, Tall, short, Female, male, Leader, follower, it doesn't matter what you are.Try being a humble firefighter not an overbearing, loudmouth about how much you do or have done, and you might not be met with such chauvinistic remarks. If you got it people will know you got it, there is no need to flaunt it. We means everybody.
I so think you where right by doing that i come from a fire dept that has females in it and they do just as good if not better then some guys.I think that he is afraid that he is going to be showen up by a female lol.I so have to say way to go keep your head up i think you will do great.
Yeah, let's all of us encourage her to drive a bigger wedge between her and her future PARTNER at some point.
You teach people to come together; not to choose up sides and hurl insults.
Getting on common ground gets you to the fire ground.
That isn't done by fanning the flames.
That would be positive pressure ventilation!
Sorry; didn't want to waste the shot.
TCSS.

Dont tell him your sorry !!! No way he flap his gums and needs his butt kicked for it. Guys like that need put in their place .
WH WHy he was a ass for doing that if you can do the job dont worry about what others think let him stew for a few days then have a talk with him to see if a apology is in order from you or him
hell no dont apoligize.stand tall and proud and dont worry about it.were glad to have you
I agree with everyone here. ESPECIALLY Jim LOL High Five he is right and so is everyone else you should not have to apologize go some guy whos is delibratly demeaning a woman for the profession she is in... Now if I were you I would have walked up and smacked him in the back of the head and said shut the hell up and then said I want to speak to you after class but that is just me...
Ashley,

1. Change this post to another topic besides General Firefighting & Rescue discussions.
2. Losing your self control did not do you any favors here. Your comment about running into a burning building at the tender young age of 19 with 1.5 years experience is iffy at best here. You just don't have the "whiskers" yet to back up the statement.
3. It sounded like this class was not a fire service related class, if it was, someone else would have chimed in here and the incident would have probably escalated.
4. I think you should be the bigger person, apologizing to the class for your outburst, but NOT apologizing to the individual for acting like an idiot...
5. Perhaps you might offer to this individual a chance to get educated by riding along. Extend the olive branch here and kill him with kindness. Your mindset is that you should feel sorry for this person. He just doesn't know any better if he blurts out comments that were obviously intended to get you to react... which you did. Don't let this happen again.
6. Don' break any of the following rules... memorize these because it is critical for your career goals if you want to survive.

DON'T COMPLAIN
DON'T EXPLAIN
DON'T EVER SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT ANYONE
DON'S EVER GIVE ADVISE BECAUSE NO ONE EVER LISTENS ANYWAY

Good luck Miss Gedra
You both were wrong !!!!

Was this in house training was there any members from other departments there?

Because if there was members from other stations there then you and they guy you were arguing with have embarassed your departments and chiefs.
Don't you all think the horse has turned to glue already?
Ashley, I agree with most of the people who responded back to you. You stood up for yourself, now maybe it was not in the most professional manner but you did not back down. Just like Padre Pete said most of the bigots and bullies in the fire service are motivated by fear. Keep up the good work.
