ok so.. i just wanted another opinion... i was in class and we somehow got on the topic of how i was a female firefighter and all the good we do for the community.. you know the kind of stuff im talking about... when from the front of the class i hear... "women have no place in any fire dept". this guy turns around and looks at me with this demeaning look... as i continue to calmly trying to explain my position.. he continues to provoke me... i could feel myself getting angry and finally i kind of exploded... i said "next time that alarm goes off you can put my turn out gear on and run your ass into the burning buliding... if you dont care to do so... then shut the hell up"... i felt bad after and now i feel like i shouldnt have been so explosive... what do you think? should i apologize?

Why should you apologize? Did he apologize to you for his comment?
If you can do the job as good as or better than others, why shouldn't you be there?
Ashley, If you are concerned about setting the right example as a firefighter, take it all the way and apologize. If you hadnt realized that blowing up was a mistake, you wouldnt have asked in the first place. Know this: Bigots and bullies are motivated only by fear. Thier actions serve as a defense mechanism against their being discovered as a volnurable human being. Shots like the one he took at you show a only lack of character and never a strength. You know that. The whole class knew that and, in reality, he would probably apologize himself if it were in his nature to do so. Your message wasnt wrong. Sharing it may have been inappropriate. Be the grown up, if you believe it was wrong, apologise for it. Seems he really needs to get out into The Fire Service more often. Does he have some axe to grind with you? Via con Dios.
I feel he owes you an apology. I feel there are lots of physical things I can't do such as carrying a person from a building, some of the extracations, etc. These are things I feel the male firefighters are stronger at. This does not mean we can't do it. There is lots of things we can do. Don't feel bad about your explosion to him ,he had it coming for making the comment first. Obviously the man does not know the true meaning of the Brotherhood
You go girl!! If you are able to perform your job just as good as any other FIREFIGHTER then as they say the proof will be in the pudding. Do not let 1 arogant male ruin your day. You owe this "man" (used loosely) nothing. Except to be the best you possibly can and prove him wrong. Good luck and stay safe.
As a female firefighter, I have dealt with the same situation,. Know that first off, he's probably a little insecure in the fact that a woman can do his job as well or better than he can. Secondly, Know that you have MANY brothers out there that have your back, believe in you, and are proud of you, Don't let one out dated asshole ruin the whole thing for you. Apologize for the outburst if you feel like you need to, but don't let him get you down!!!!
I wouldn't worry about apologizing to him especially if he didn't apologize to you for his rudeness. If you are doing the job as good as or better than others keep up the good work.
Before I forget to explain what I put in my earlier post, I definately was not attacking this post of yours. I was simply hoping to give a little bit of guidance as to where to put a discussion like this. The only reason that I am explaining my post is because I know that typed words don't really have much emotion and sometimes get taken out of context. I always try to avoid having anything that I post from being taken in any sort of "attacking" manner. Since I don't truly know alot of people here, I usually try to explain myself before this can happen. Stay safe.

Kali,

You are brutally honest! Gotta Love it.
I agree 100%. I know it does not feel good when people do these things but if you work in a large city, it is the norm not the exception.

This is an unfortunate, misguided individual who, back in the caveman days may have been threatened by an aggressive cerebral women who saved his as-! and can't come to terms with his own fears. Embrace change, women in my dept. do very well and I'm proud to work along side such fine firefighters/paramedics they have dedicated their lives to become.

Fraternally,
Rick Westerman
Been there... done that...
