Serious Games as an Education & Training Tool for First Responders

Is anyone familiar with Seriosu Games and their applications to first responders?

A Serious Game according to Wiki ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serious_game ) is, "A serious game is a term used to refer to a software or hardware application developed with game technology and game design principles for a primary purpose other than pure entertainment. Serious games include games used for educational, persuasive, political, or health purposes."

A few websites supporting the use of Serious Games include the following:

Specific to Emergency Managers are some of the following:

Will Interactive http://www.willinteractive.com/products

Breakaway (Incident commander) http://tinyurl.com/694m8z

Evacuation Simulator http://www.emergencysimulators.com/

RescueSim (Also Vstep) http://www.vstepoffice.nl/rescuesim/

With budgets getting tighter, is Serious Games a serious way of addressing some of the training shortfalls?

I've just added these videos from YouTube about the ADMS system.

I'm a huge fan of this sort of technology and its use in training.

However, I'm assuming that many have not been exposed to this sort of thing based on the lack of responses????

Firearms Simulator
The Folsom, Calif. Police Department is one of the lucky few departments in the state to have access to a high-tech training simulator.

What are the costs of these simulators?

No idea, but I would suggest over the long run would be far more cost effective than some of the hot fire training ,etc that is being done....

You could stagger the training- build up command and control and vehicle placement and hose placement, etc, using the serious games option, then get more bang for the buck when doing hot fire training.

Serious games are not a replacement for hot fire training, etc- they're a tool to assist...

I agree. The RescueSim website has no information on cost and has no contact here in the states. The Incidetn Commander is $5 for shipping from the NIJ.

Bear in mind they are two very (very, very!) different tools though.

The Rescue Sim is a first person point of view where you get to walk through the scene and intereact with things and people doing stuff.....
