My dept. is sorely lacking in area of RIT training, any RIT that is set up, is the two in two out rule and that's extent of our RIT. We've never had a mayday situation and, I hope we never do, however it could happen. I would like to remedy this problem waiting to happen, when we redo our SOPs in the coming months but I am unsure as how to do so. Any thought or suggestions?

Try State Fire Marshal School.

-Re-doing your SOPs isn't the only answer. Yourself, and any other members in your department interested, should take RIT/FAST classes, and firefighter survival classes.

-I see you live out in the sticks, so you're probably a small department, so once you get a confirmed working structure fire, immediately call upon mutual aid as a designated RIT/FAST team.

Just a couple ideas. Peace!

Thanks...it is our policy that as soon as we get toned for a structure fire, we automatically call for mutual aid, as for training I have been looking in to that the problem there is all the one I have seen so far require firefighter2 as a prerequisite and I am the only one on my dept. with that cert.

Redoing SOP's does not change culture. You have to reprogram your members into understanding the need for and the must have mentality towards RIT.

just that 2 in two out is moving on now. with all my rit training i was told you send two guys in you need to have at least 3 if not 4 to remove them

You could probably ask other departments to let you see their SOP's, also remember that your department has to commit to the RIT programs by placing it in you I.C. system and commit to training on it. It should be a easy sale this is to save one of our own at times of need. Also if your department doesn't have any technical rescue team might want to find one near you to notifiy it you have a commercial structure collapse with one of your own trapped. Good luck

That's a good idea the problem is that the other dept. in my county are in the same situation as we are. Yes you would think it would be an easy sell....but you'd be surprised.

Start out the right way....with State OFPC certified training, and in getting the proper equipment to do the job....there is a heck of a lot more to it than announcing OK Guys, we are now a RIT/FAST team....Paul

I am with a vol dept and we might get 10 ppl on a structure fire. We train with other depts that border our district. We work very well together and we each other for mutual aid. The department that is going to assist does RIT for the other dept. Sometimes it will have members from both depts. If needed and personal allow. Rit is the second dept. primemery job on Mutual aid calls.
