Parakeet is Lone Survivor in Fire That Killed 22 Pet Birds

ROCKVILLE, Md. - Montgomery County fire officials say more than 20 pet birds were killed in a house fire in Rockville.

Firefighters arrived at the house in the 500 block of Manakee Street about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday and saw smoke and fire outside the house and residents trying to get in to rescue the birds.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze. About 22 parakeets, parrots and finches died; one parakeet was found alive.

Officials say the fire, which caused $400,000 in damage, appears to have been caused by an electrical problem.
