Yes, pagers to jr's/explorers. Should know what's going on.
no to hot zones. Keep them in a safe zone. Make them available for changing bottles, pull hose or tools off trucks. Basically observe what's going on and get a "feel" for it. it's still learning.

I am a junior yes i think we should have a pager but not a radio.Juniors cant go up near the fire mainly with my dept we are around the guy doing the pumps or standing there. The only people that should have radios are firepolice, guy running the pipes, guy who is controling the pumps, guys inside, and all the officers no juniors need a radio because 99% of the time you wont be using them.

That's true Travis. I would like to add that it may also be an availability issue as well. Sometimes there may not be enough pagers to supply to jr's. And everybody knows that the older members will get the pagers first.

I think juniors should have pagers. For example today, Our asst. chief toned us out for a special assignment. That assignment was removing snow from around the hydrants. How would we be notified about these events. On a scene having juniors benifits you. It puts another senior member to work and not fetching tools. Some depts you need all the help you can get. Juniors are also the future of your dept set a good example, and dont trash talk about them. They will get upset and leave. You dont want that and may not be able to afford to lose people. You saying negative things about juniors wont help you get along when you need them. You could be setting yourself up for disaster. Also as a side note. My dept has senior members that dont have FF1, Does that mean they shouldn't have pagers? And you dont consider juniors as members of your dept?

We argue about this all the time because we got one on our dept. The last time I knew juniors or cadets are under the age of 18 right? We issue pagers to the cadets but they are to respond to the hall to listen to the radio traffic and help clean up after the fire. They get paid for it but they dont get the fire scene experience like they need. I see both sides of the argument and the biggest reason for that is most fire department insurance wont cover anyone under the age of 18 and I think OSHA has a part in that too. Do we all agree NO but you got to realize that it is not just the individual fire departments, the state and osha has a part in that too!

Once you are cleared to repond to calls (after you finish your prebasic, informal training from the station), you are given a pager.

I am still a junior at 17 but a FF/EMT with many other classes and certifications, age and rank isnt everything, its what you know and how you use it. Experience from running calls since 16 has given me the tools I need to excel in the fire service, do what needs to be done and do it right.

Ammendum....
because you have a pager does not mean go to the scene, it means report to the firehouse unless the scene is along your most direct route of travel to the firehouse, only officers can go to the scene. This is sometimes "looked over" for serious calls.

Oh wow...!!! One whole year in the Department...!!! Maybe you could come and run IC for us on the next call......On a serious note...and I will be honest and straight with you.....If the State and the Insurance carrier told us that there isn't a problem with folks under the age of 18 running calls then I wouldn't have an issue....BUT...that isn't the case....I will NOT see my Department put in jeopardy or my Village put in legal jeopardy because some young person (politically correct) wants to ride in "a shiny Firetruck"...I don't give a rats butt what your "certifications" are...(In NY you cannot take FFI unless you are 18 years old)....So that's my last post on this subject.....Paul

I`m a junior and I think all juniors should get pagers.I think that because if we go to a call we will learn something. We can also help with getting ladders of the trucks to helping put air packs on.With us doing little things save sometime.

Everybody has to keep in mind, this is a very old post. and the dude who started this probably hasn't been on since. So with his attitude and only one year in the deartment when he posted this, I can tell he's a know-it-all. I'd like to have his phone number so when I have to run command again, I could call him so he can call my shots for me.
