I'm a junior Firefighter. I have a pager, decent turnout gear, and the training to make me "useable" on the fireground. I don't see why someone who is willing, and capable to help can't do it in some places. I'm part of a rural all volunteer station, I am currently one of two Juniors on the department, and I respond to any and all calls my department runs.

Everyone has to start somewhere. It is not for you or me to decide. It is for the officers of each department depending on their unique situation and the training level of the juniors or explorers. I personally do not think anyone who is not at least 18 years old should be on scene. That is just my opinion though.

Our dept. issues a pager to every member. Because we are a small town fire dept., and if we get a structure fire, everyone responds.

Im a junior firefighter here in NJ and they issue us pagers and we can do just about everything a normal firefighter can do except enter a burning building. The cadets however (14-15 yrs old) are not issued pagers or gear. We also get text messages when we get a call too, which can be very helpful.

mr. bloodgood. i dont like this topic. do whatever your department wants but not giving a junior firefighter a pager is wrong.

Yes, pagers to jr's/explorers. Should know what's going on.
no to hot zones. Keep them in a safe zone. Make them available for changing bottles, pull hose or tools off trucks. Basically observe what's going on and get a "feel" for it. it's still learning.
