Fire Hits Vermont Store for a Third Time

PUTNEY, Vt. - Fire officials in Putney say the fire that destroyed the Putney General Store overnight is being labeled suspicious.

Putney Fire Department Chief Thomas Goddard says the four-alarm blaze is of undetermined origin, but he says the fact that the building was unheated and unoccupied - together with the speed with which the fire spread - makes it suspicious.

More than 100 firefighters from Vermont and New Hampshire battled the fire, which was reported about 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

For many in Putney, the fire is doubly tragic. The Putney Historical Society, which bought the building after a fire in May 2008, was nearly finished with renovations and was in the process of leasing it to a new general store operator when the second fire hit.

Unfortunately it does happen, I have been a firefighter for Elmore Fire & Rescue for over 11 years now!!! When I first became a member in August 1998 we started to have multiple fires in the Town of Elmore, this lasted for a few months!! The last fire that was lit was in an old historic home on the Elmore Mountain Road, this fire was very big & turned into a flash over it came close to burning Wolcott Fire Departments Chief... Once the fire investigator was on scene our 2nd Captain was right at his side to see what the investigator was doing, the investigator went into the other end of the house & discovered that the fire did not get in there & it was still soaked in diesel fuel... The investigator also found our 2nd Captains radio & pager in a stairwell, it turns out this guy was lighting all the fires because he was pissed at our fire chief... Unfortunately he was only in jail for 5 years after causing thousands of dollars of damage even loss to families!!! Unfortunately it does happen & gives the fire department a bad rep for a while, we got through it & now have 23 members serving the Town of Elmore!!! Find this asshole & send him to jail for more than 5 years!!!
