Many believe that a fire truck should be RED.
Why?
Why is red the magic color?
How was it chosen as the color of the fire service?
Are there colors out there that have been proven to be more visible?

Have we FINALLY turned a corner in this fire service?

NAW!
We'll still have idiots drinking and responding.
Glad it's all good where you are though, Amy.

With all of these high-tech paints available (now that we're in the Twenty-first Century!!) has anyone considered using a paint that is Red in Daylight, but relfects a "Chartreuse Yellow" color when illuminated in a low-light environment (at night)?

Seems like the best of both worlds: tradition by day, extra visibility by night.

Our trucks our white. We aren't allowed to drink at our fire house either. Everybody thinks white is hard to keep clean but it really isn't.

In as much as tradition, pride and ownership play a huge roll in our heritage, I am relatively certain the paying customer might not even care if they rolled up in primer grey!
Ours are white with blue stripes.
The only variation in our 104 year history occured when we couldn't get white pain for the handcart in 1904---so Red it was, and again in the '50's we had a light yellow colored tanker.
One of my good friend's department around Buffalo also has white equipment. When he was Chief, and they sold their Engines to departments in Flordia, it was customary to send some sun screen with them...just to make certain they did not get burned from the sun, and turn red..........
I like my white apparatus......

Ok, first off i must calrify that the only reason our second out ended up this was because of an ordering SNAFU with Sutphen. Originally it was supposed to be white w/ a blue stripe on the bottom, as you can see it ended up the other way around. You havent lived until you've driven a BLUE fire engine. The running joke is "It turns red again when it warms up" I like it, it's definately unique.

I'm not sure what color works best but I've seen them all. I've photographed trucks in red, maroon, yellow, white, blue, black, green, and even orange!

Yes.
We don't want to confuse fire trucks with tow trucks.

Pyramid or steaming pile - I would be inclined to find a different town and fire department.

if I absolutely had to, I would carry a charged line up. Just for the single reason of the hose reaction when charging.
