Description:

Responsible for assisting the team that conducts routine inspections of existing structures, inspections of new structures and modifications within existing structures, including construction features, automatic sprinklers and other fire protection systems, fire alarm systems, life safety features, hazardous materials and processes, to evaluate compliance with the Fire Code and related South Carolina construction codes, and assisting with implementation of community risk reduction programs, as well as investigating and determining the causes of fires and explosions. Collects evidence; interviews witnesses and occupants, photographs the scenes, documents events, transports evidence to City PD for analysis and maintains chain of custody of all reports, photos, and evidence; and prepares final reports and summaries. Obtains warrants as needed. Submits depositions and testifies as required. Responds to emergency incidents, as assigned, and provide s assistance to the Incident Commander at fire scenes in support of the required effort. In the event of major events such as terrorist events, storms or other emergency situations, this position may be subject to 24-hour shifts or any other emergency schedule that is necessary to meet the City’s needs. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements: Associate’s Degree in an unrelated field and 8 years of related experience as a firefighter, fire inspector, public fire safety education, or similar, with not less than 2 years of this time as a firefighter or Combination of education and experience with 10 years of related experience as a firefighter, fire inspector, public fire safety education, or similar, with not less than 2 years of this time as a firefighter. Preferred: An Associate’s Degree (AA/AS) in Fire Technology, Fire Science or Engineering, with a combination of experience that includes 4 years of related experience as a firefighter, f ire inspector, public fire safety education, or similar. Preferred experience should include 2 years of experience as a firefighter and 2 years of experience as a fire inspector, public educator, fire investigator or similar tasks showing a progression in the field of fire prevention and safety. Requires: International Code Council (ICC) or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Level 1 Fire Inspector, Basic fire investigation course or certification (16 hour minimum), IFSAC Firefighter II , Hazardous Materials Operations, ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, IS 700 & 800. Preferred certifications of candidate or must be obtained within 18 months: Resident State Fire Marshal Certification, International Code Council (ICC) or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Level 2 Fire Inspector, Fire investigation course or certification (32 hour minimum), Fire & Life Safety Educator, Juvenile Firesetter Specialist level 1, Principles of Building Construction: Non Combustible & Combustible, Hazardous Materials Technician , Incident Safety Officer, Fire Officer I, Courtroom Preparation and Testimony (8 Hr Minimum). Valid state issued driver’s license. To perform this job successfully, an individual should have a working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Excel and Word or similar software.
