Salt Lake City Firefighters Rescue Dozens in Apartment Fire

Residents were hanging from second-story balconies

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Dozens of people have been displaced after a three-alarm fire tore through a Salt Lake City apartment complex overnight.

Salt Lake City Fire Battalion Chief Gary McCarty says some residents were hanging from second-story balconies and had to be rescued after the blaze broke out about 3 a.m. Thursday near North Redwood Road.

KSL reports (http://bit.ly/HkGItS ) three apartments were destroyed and dozens more have smoke damage. Authorities have not yet released the cause of the fire or the cost of the damage.

American Red Cross officials say they're providing shelter and food to about 90 adults and 30 children.

The fire started on the second floor of the three-story complex, then spread to the third floor. A number of animals were also rescued, including dogs, cats, turtles and birds.
