PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon woman's neighbors had reason to worry: Virginia Cartier hadn't picked up her Sunday newspaper and her car had not been moved.
When police forced their way into her condo to check on her, they found Cartier, 67, had been pinned beneath a dresser for four days without food or water.
"She is like crazy about her Sunday paper, and she hadn't picked it up," Kyla Sexton told KGW-TV. "And her car hasn't moved. So we were really worried about her."
Sexton said her stepfather called for help.
Deputies said the dresser fell over when Cartier tried to move it in her condominium in the Portland suburb of Cedar Mill.
When they found her, she was in and out of consciousness and it took several deputies and firefighters to free her, Sgt. Mark Wilkinson said.
"For a human being to survive like that, you're talking about three days without fluids alone," he said. "She must have a heck of a constitution and a will to survive."
She was treated at a hospital for injuries to both legs and released, KGW reported.
Neighbors said she was staying with a friend after the ordeal.
