CHARLESTON, S.C. – WCBD is reporting that Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. will name Oregon Deputy Chief Karen E. Brack as the new fire chief.
Brack is one of four candidates picked from an applicant field of 61. All four were in Charleston in April to visit the city. The other three were Deputy Chief Paul Berardi (Kansas City, MO), Deputy Chief Richard Bannon (Mobile, AL) and Fire Chief Edwin Smith (Henrico County, VA).
Brack has been serving as deputy chief of operations since 2007. She reportedly has 29 years of experience and was a Battalion Chief in Fulton County, Georgia from 1982 to 2007. Brack holds Associates in Applied Science Degree in Paramedic and Fire Science, Bachelors in Biology/Psychology and Masters level coursework in Exercise Physiology.
The current salary range for the fire chief position is between $120,000 and $135,000 a year.
Brack will be replacing former chief Tom Carr, who retired due to complications from Parkinson's diesease.
