High winds may have helped spread the fire

CHICAGO (AP) — An infant girl was found dead after firefighters extinguished a blaze in an apartment building on Chicago's northwest side.

Authorities say the fire started Wednesday evening at the rear of the two-story building. Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said people outside the building, including the infant's grandmother, told firefighters the baby was still inside.

The two-month-old infant was found dead in a back bedroom in the first floor apartment.

Fire officials say the cause of the fire remains under investigation, adding high winds may have been a factor in how quickly the fire spread.

Authorities say 30 people were displaced by the blaze.
