AUSTELL, Ga. (AP) — Police say firefighters rescued two children from a smoke-filled apartment in suburban Atlanta after they were left alone while their mother went to work.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://bit.ly/KVWBxE ) reports that police arrested 38-year-old Mercedes Guadalupe Bahena on Wednesday.

Cobb County Police Officer Mike Bowman says firefighters responded to a neighbor's call about heavy smoke at an apartment complex in the Whisper Woods in Austell.

Bowman says the children were treated for smoke inhalation at WellStar Kennestone Hospital.

Bowman says Bahena told police she admitted to leaving her children alone. Bahena says she left for work and accidently forgot to turn off the stove after cooking.

Jail records say Bahena was charged with two counts each of child deprivation and reckless conduct. Jail records didn't indicate whether she has an attorney.
