SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Salem Fire Department says closing two fire stations will increase response time and reduce service to 2004 levels.

The city announced last week it's closing the stations because of limited property tax revenue and the firefighters' union refusal to reduce hours.

The Statesman Journal reports (http://is.gd/YMc4DA ) the city will operate with the same size department it had until 2005.
