BOSTON (AP) — The head of the Boston firefighters union is under scrutiny for hooking up a department-owned hose to a hydrant outside his home to fill his neighbor's pool.

Fire Commissioner Roderick Fraser said he was made aware of the allegations in an anonymous letter, which he forwarded to the Boston Water and Sewer Commission and Mayor Thomas Menino in June.

Richard Paris, president of the Firefighters Union Local 718, said he "messed up" and apologized in an interview with the Boston Herald (http://bit.ly/MAGEbq ). He said he and his Hyde Park neighbor usually use garden hoses to fill the pool, but that can take three days. With temperatures soaring into the 90s, they wanted to fill the pool quicker.

The water commission has billed the neighbor $116.

Paris has not been disciplined.
