ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Seven Asheville firefighters remain hospitalized after an office building blaze that killed one firefighter and injured 10 of his colleagues.

Thirty-seven-year-old Capt. Jeff Bowen died after he rushed into the five-story building Thursday.

Officials say firefighters were searching the building when they heard Bowen call 'mayday' on his radio. He was taken to Mission Hospital where he died. Bowen had been with the department 13 years.

Nine of the injured firefighters were taken to the hospital and three were treated and released.

One firefighter, Jay Bettencourt, was being treated Friday at the Joseph M. Still burn center in Augusta, Ga. There was no immediate word on his condition.

Fire Chief Scott Burnett said the more than 200 people in the building got out safely.
