5-Alarm Fire Destroys Delaware Apartment Complex

Fire companies from as far as 20 miles away helped area firefighters battle the blaze

BEAR, Del. (AP) — A five-alarm fire that ripped through a luxury apartment complex in Bear has displaced about 60 residents.

The fire was first reported at the Brandywine Woods apartments, west of New Castle, about 1:30 a.m. Thursday. Christiana Fire Company Chief Brian Reeder says fire companies from as far as West Grove, Pa., about 20 miles away, arrived to help area firefighters battle the blaze.

At least five people were injured, including three firefighters, but none of the injuries were life-threatening.

Assistant state Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio says 24 units were severely damaged by fire, water or smoke. He says the cause of the fire is under investigation.
