MCHENRY, Ill. (AP) — A fire that swept through a barn in northern Illinois has killed at least 15 horses and destroyed the building.
Several people ran through the burning stable in McHenry County to free some of the horses. Firefighters from 20 departments responded to the blaze, which started around 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Fire officials say at least 15 horses died. That's about half the number of horses that were being kept at the Black Tie Stable, which boards and trains the animals.
McHenry County Animal Control says three other horses are missing and thought to be running loose. Helicopters are searching for them.
Battalion Chief Mike Majercik of the McHenry Township Fire Protection District says officials are looking into whether coals from a grill may have sparked the blaze.
