CHULA VISTA, Calif. — A 102-year-old man has been rescued from a burning Chula Vista apartment after his neighbors and landlord helped pull him from the smoky unit.

Building manager Nidhal Butros says she and a neighbor heard a smoke alarm go off Wednesday afternoon and rushed to the first-floor apartment of Jose Gorg.

Butros tells U-T San Diego (http://bit.ly/wTTAo3) that she unlocked the door and saw Gorg struggling to get out. She says the kitchen and dining room were on fire and there was black smoke everywhere.

They helped Gorg leave and another neighbor dragged him across the grass to another apartment. Gorg wasn't seriously injured and was later picked up by his family.

One firefighter suffered burns to his ears while dousing the fire. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
