WEST WARWICK, R.I. (AP) — West Warwick police say a 46-year-old man was killed and a 48-year-old man badly injured when a makeshift shelter in a wooded area caught fire.

Firefighters responded Thursday night to the wooded area near Roberts Street and a bike path behind the Brookside Manor, which is believed to be a gathering spot for homeless people. Police say an abandoned camper was engulfed in flames and a man was lying outside it, badly burned.

He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where he later died. Another man was found in a nearby home where he had gone to seek help. Police say he is in stable condition.

The names of the victims have not been released. They are both from West Warwick.

The fire's cause is under investigation.
