You don’t have to look far to find examples of misconduct in the firehouse; YouTube and the Internet provide abundant evidence of harassment and hazing. These behaviors can range from amusing to illegal, but they have one thing in common: They require a company officer’s attention and in many cases, prompt action. In this interview, FireRescue editor-in-chief Tim Sendelbach interviews Alisa Arnoff, a partner in the law firm Scalambrino & Arnoff. Arnoff explains how her COLS seminar, “Playing ‘Conduct Cop’ As Lead Officer: Hazing, Horseplay & Harassment,” will underscore the importance of company officer involvement in personnel issues and how company officers can become more comfortable confronting problem behaviors. She provides several steps company officers should take when faced with a potentially serious personnel issue.
